          Interactive Spring Carnival

Celebration of Inspire Innovation Adds to Annual Fun

          By Heidi Opdyke

Spring CarnivalSpring Carnival is always a big celebration. This year, it's even bigger.

In a year recognizing the success of the Inspire Innovation, and Scotch 'n' Soda's 75th anniversary, new twists will provide added dimensions to the fun.

"Carnival is a time of celebration each and every year. This year, we're even more excited because the CMU community has the opportunity to celebrate the Inspire Innovation campaign, which the entire community has helped make a success," said Andrew Shaindlin, associate vice president for Alumni Relations and Annual Giving.

The campaign, which publicly launched in 2008, has several notable achievements that are already benefiting the university: an even stronger global alumni and volunteer network, increased financial resources for education and research, and a greater level of visibility for the university worldwide.

"We're just beginning the celebration at Carnival. Alumni, parents, faculty, staff and students will all have the chance to participate - online and in person - through the official end of the campaign on June 30."

This year's Carnival will also be easier than ever for making lasting memories. Carnival-goers can visit any of the four Welcome Areas - the University Center and tents at Midway, the Fence and Frew Street - throughout the weekend, where they'll receive a free gift bag and be able to take, share and post photos to the interactive wall at we.cmu.edu, which launched earlier this week (April 15-20). The University Center will feature a "green screen" photo booth with digital backdrops of the campus. People will be able to take photos with friends and family, receive a free printed photo and post images to the interactive wall.

This wall, accessible at touchscreens in each Welcome Area and via we.cmu.edu, allows people to participate in the celebration - anytime, anywhere.

"By adding their own photos and comments, the CMU community can join the celebration from wherever they are and continue the momentum that has propelled Carnegie Mellon to this historic moment," he said.

A new smartphone app, CMU Celebration Tour, also will provide augmented reality at popular campus locations. The free app - which can be downloaded by viewing we.cmu.edu through a smartphone - will showcase fun facts and videos about various campus landmarks and the Inspire Innovation campaign.

Scotch'n'Soda will be having a special anniversary reception from 6-9 p.m. on Friday. In addition to sharing some rediscovered history of the organization, Scotch'n'Soda alumni are reinstating the Buzz Blair Award, named after a founding member. The reception is $10, and registration is required.
